LANZBC member since 2009, Leandro joined the Board in 2014, serving as Vice-President since 2015. In his term as a Board Director and VP, he has developed the Council’s current Communications Strategy, focusing on firming our relationships with current partner organisations, enhancing member benefits, the delivery of a cross-sector events plan and providing relevant and privileged in-market information to our members. He is an editor for the council’s monthly newsletter and responsible for the Council’s adhesion to a new and more streamlined newsletter delivery tool. He also had a key role in the planning, design and delivery of the new Council website.
Originally from the state of Minas Gerais, (where most of the Brazilian-originated coffee comes from), he has over 13 years experience fostering two-way business and cultural links between New Zealand and Latin America. During this time and through varied roles, he has gained a deep understanding and hands-on experience on the intricacies of how Latin Americans and New Zealanders do business. He is the founder of Reel Brazil Film Festival and co-owner/Managing Director of BRAINZ Intelligent Imports – a New Zealand based company, operating in the cocoa and chocolate sector.
In previous years, he worked at the Brazilian Embassy in Wellington (2002 – 2006), set-up their trade sector and managed their Cultural/Business events portfolio, which included the coordination of the NZ Latin American Film Festival. Following the work at the Embassy he moved to Toronto, Canada, for two years and worked with the Brazilian Consulate and an international NGO to set-up and run a Brazilian Film Festival in Toronto.
In 2009, back in New Zealand, he founded the Reel Brazil Film Festival. The festival programme mixes an award-winning film selection with Brazilian parties and hosts a Gala Corporate networking evening in all festival locations (Auckland, Wellington, Nelson). This evening takes place under the Brazilian Ambassador’s patronage and counts with the presence of Latin American and New Zealand government and business organisations as well as the general public and business people that have an interest in Latin America.
As a Business Consultant, he helped Yealands Estate Wines (2010) crack into the Brazilian wine scene and secure a contract with one of Brazil’s largest supermarket chain and worked as a translator and business advisor for a New Zealand public relations company that represented the interests of Brazil’s oil giant, Petrobrás, in New Zealand.
Most recently, alongside the setting up of his importing business he contracted to the Ministry of Social Development as a Project Manager and Programme Advisor in major Government change programmes in the Social Housing, Operational Policy and Health, Safety and Security space.
