Air New Zealand's inaugural flight to Buenos Aires

Tue, 1 Dec, 2015
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Business links between New Zealand and Latin America received a major boost in December when Air New Zealand began its direct flights to Buenos Aires.

To celebrate the occasion the airline invited a delegation to join them on the maiden flight on December 1 and in festivities in Argentina. The delegation was headed by senior NZ Minister Paula Bennett, whose portfolios include Associate Tourism, and it also featured Tourism New Zealand chair Kerry Prendergast, LANZBC President Matthew O'Meagher, current and former LANZBC Vice-Presidents Leandro Cavalcanti and Peter Cullen, Australia-Latin America Business Council chairman Jose Blanco, Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency CEO Chris Whelan, media representatives, and Air New Zealand ambassador Richie McCaw.

The visit to Buenos Aires could not have been better timed, as it occurred during the political transition in Argentine from the outgoing interventionist Kirchner administration to the much more business-friendly presidency of Mauricio Macri. It thus provided an opportunity to assess the potential to reboot business connections between our two countries.

The Council wishes to congratulate Air New Zealand on the launch of these flights and to thank its Chair Tony Carter, its CEO Christopher Luxon, its Chief Strategy, Networks and Alliances Officer Stephen Jones and its Head of Government and Industry Affairs Duncan Small for the invitation to share in this historic occasion. It further wishes to thank its own Buenos Aires-based member Gustavo Richardson for the introductions he made to local business leaders -- especially to our Argentine partner organisation, the Argentine Chamber of Commerce for Asia and the Pacific. LANZBC members can expect to see greater attention to Argentina this year as the two organisations pursue opportunities they uncovered.

To learn more about the new moment in Argentina we invite you to read a report on the visit from one of the delegation journalists, the New Zealand Herald's Hamish Fletcher.
