CELEBRATING THE SUCCESS OF THE MEXICAN FILM INDUSTRY

Tue, 26 Feb, 2019 5:00 PM — 8:00 PM
Bridgeway Cinema, 122 Queen Street, Northcote, Auckland

LANZBC Members and guests gathered on Auckland’s North Shore earlier to week to celebrate the Oscars success of the Mexican film Roma, with a special private screening of the film at the Bridgeway Cinema. Sponsored by the Mexican Embassy, and supported by Besos Latinos, the evening was a wonderful way to kick start the LANZBC’s event programme for 2019.

Guests filled up on delicious aperitivos provided by Besos Latinos and were each treated to a free sample of delicious Yerba Mate to take home to try, from newest LANZBC member La Pachamama. A business card draw for a stunning ceramic Mexican Sugar Skull and iconic Frida tote bag - kindly donated by local Mexican Artisan Homeware store Made in Mexico - was ultimately won by Yovanka Tomitch of Language Links.

Prior to the screening, Daniela Gil Sevilla, First Secretary of the Embassy of Mexico, reminded guests that Roma was a work of art. Its aesthetics, sensitivity and the originality of its subject matter, accord it a particular place in the history of cinema and forms a fine illustration of Mexican talent, not only of its director, Alfonso Cuarón, but also other Mexican directors such as Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso González Iñárritu.

The day before the screening, Roma had won three Oscars out of the ten it was nominated for: Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography, adding to the multitude of awards already won by the film and its production team. The evening therefore, was a celebration of the success of a great cinematic production.

The LANZBC would like to thank the Mexican Embassy for supporting this event. Our thanks also to Besos Latinos for catering – we look forward to working with both organisations on more events throughout the coming year.
