Common Grounds: New Zealand and America Latina symposium
Wed, 21 Oct, 2015
Victoria University’s Law Faculty, Wellington
Organised and hosted by Victoria University’s Law Faculty, the symposium included an LANZBC-sponsored afternoon session on ‘Doing Business with Brazil’. The session began with papers on domestic and international arbitration and choice of law clauses in Brazilian contracts from visiting experts Adriana Braghetta and Paolo Nalin, who highlighted the strength of Brazilian institutions.
It also featured a lively presentation from NZTE’s Brazil Beachhead advisor Fabiano Deffenti on a range of legal issues of interest to New Zealand companies engaging there, followed by suggestions by video from Erika Levin of New York’s Stone & Magnanini of sectors in which New Zealand, Brazilian and US companies could collaborate.
The symposium was the first event in New Zealand to discuss Latin American legal history, constitutional culture and commercial arrangements, and was attended by LANZBC President Matthew O’Meagher, LANZBC Director Brendan Mahar, the Ambassadors of Brazil and Chile, Wellington lawyers, and postgraduate students. The Council congratulates the conference organisers on their foresight in organising this event, and is happy to make its papers available to Council members.
